Why Herbal Supplements Can Help You Manage Stress

posted in: Blog | 0

Did you know that according to the World Health Organisation 80% of the global population depends on plants to deal with common ailments? Also, the past fifteen years more researchers focused on studying the therapeutic effects of many herbs and plants. Nowadays, herbs and herbal supplements are becoming more popular because people want to take charge of their own health as well as avoiding synthetic drugs that can bring out unpleasant side effects.

The real advantage of herbal supplements is in the prevention and treatment of early symptoms of physical and mental imbalances caused by stress. Though herbs don’t treat diseases they contribute to our body’s ability to correct and regenerate. In other words, herbs help the body to neutralise the negative effects of stress. Therefore, herbs in all forms should re-enter our households in the way our ancestors used them. For prevention, regeneration and treatment of minor ailments. This doesn’t mean we won’t use the wonders of modern medicine and its technology when it’s appropriate. However, more and more people take responsibility for their own wellbeing and are happy to benefit from all the different kinds of herbal products available on the market.

The Root Cause of Diseases of Civilisation

This mismatch between our ancient physiology and the western diet and lifestyle underlies many so-called diseases of civilization, including coronary heart disease, obesity, hypertension, type 2 diabetes, epithelial cell cancers, autoimmune disease, and osteoporosis, which are rare or virtually absent in hunter–gatherers and other non-westernized populations.

The Swedish researchers call it a mismatch – and they are right. Our bodies, including the nervous system and the brain, aren’t designed to live the way we do. It’s like trying to gallop with a donkey and pretending it’s a horse. Yes, that’s how we try to live. No wonder it doesn’t work. Besides, many people suffer from chronic stress which, in many cases, is caused by artificial social pressure. We are literally bombarded with messages of not being enough, not having enough etc. This puts the nervous system into a constant fight, flight, freeze or fawn state – the defence mechanisms for survival.

Stress is an important biological reaction. However, it’s supposed to work only when our physical survival is threatened. Instead, many people live in constant tension which has a detrimental effect on their health. What’s so sad that this has become “normal” and widely accepted.

A Hectic Lifestyle Combined With Stress and Poor Diet

A hectic lifestyle often means that we are trying to do too much while neglecting the basic needs of our body and mind. These basic needs are 1) healthy diet and time to digest it 2) relaxation 3) a good night sleep. Besides, hectic lifestyle doesn’t happen in a vacuum. It happens in combination with other “stressors” (relational problems, work-related stress and pressure to perform, environmental factors etc.). Then the fine balance that biologists call homeostatic equilibrium can easily be jeopardised. This happens especially when a hectic lifestyle is combined with prolonged stress. If we are lucky enough, we experience symptoms that help us to make changes.  If not, a disease develops. Unfortunately, our biological makeup cannot cope with such conditions for a longer period of time. That’s why the Swedish scientists call it a mismatch!

Healthy Diet and Herbal Supplements For Stress

A healthy diet isn’t only about our “three a day” portions of fruits and vegetables, plus the optimum intake of carbs, proteins and fat. It’s about getting enough nutrients, vitamins and minerals. The goal is to keep our immune system strong and our digestive system in optimum condition.

It’s not always easy to sit down for a meal. Luckily, there are other options for us to give our bodies what they need. Healthy snacks, food form and herbal supplements are a great way of giving our diet an extra boost. Among the most popular food supplements that are beneficial for stress-related symptoms are omega 3 oils, probiotics, plant-based protein powders, superfood blends and dietary fibre. The most popular herbs that can be consumed in food, drink or as supplements are turmeric, hemp, aloe vera, peppermint, dandelion, chamomile, cinnamon, flaxseed, ginger and garlic.

All these herbs have multiple health benefits and are perfect for neutralising the negative effects of poor diet and too much stress.

Finally, it’s very important to find a time to eat in a relaxed manner. Otherwise, our digestive system has to work extra hard. If we eat regularly in a hurry, our stomach will let us know sooner or later!

The Solution Is A Healthy Lifestyle

More and more people have realised that living a healthy lifestyle is a necessity, not a luxury or something you can do later. It doesn’t matter how much money you earn if you cannot enjoy it and if your health is suffering. In the end, it defeats the purpose. A healthy lifestyle is about balance because that’s how our bodies work best. As it’s so difficult to keep the balance we need to “supplement” our lives with holidays and lazy weekends to catch up with sleep. Then we have to include exercises to give our bodies enough movement that is hard to get in front of a computer screen. Finally, we need to boost our diet with some extras such as organic herbal supplements to compensate for the neglect we suffer when we eat on the go. Luckily, for every problem, there is a solution!
